Benny Pennello's Pizzeria Review - Charlotte, NC

Benny Pennello's Pizza storefront at night in NoDa, Charlotte, North Carolina

I was born and raised in Brooklyn, so I do not throw around the words “New York-style pizza” just because a slice is big enough to fold. Benny Pennello's in NoDa gets the look, the feel, and most importantly the pizza right. I've been here countless times, and after this visit my opinion is exactly where it has been for years: Benny's is fire.

There are pizza places I try once, places I go back to every now and then, and then there are spots that simply become part of my Charlotte rotation. Benny Pennello's is in that last group. I moved to Charlotte 17 years ago after growing up in Brooklyn, New York, and one of the first things I learned is that finding pizza down here that really scratches the New York itch is not as simple as finding a restaurant that calls itself New York-style.

Benny's does not need to oversell it. The slices are huge, thin enough to fold, sturdy enough to hold, and built around the combination that matters: crust, sauce, cheese, and the right amount of grease. It is casual, a little rough around the edges in the best way, and completely at home in NoDa. I have eaten here enough times that this is not a first-impression review. I know what I am walking into, and I keep coming back because the experience keeps giving me what I came for.

My Rating Easy 5 Stars

My recommendation is simple: if giant foldable slices, a no-frills NoDa atmosphere, and legit New York-style pizza sound like your kind of meal, Benny Pennello's belongs on your list.

The Pizza Is the Reason I Keep Coming Back

I kept this visit simple with cheese and pepperoni, which is honestly one of my favorite ways to judge a pizza shop. When the basics are right, there is nowhere for the pizza to hide. You can see the actual balance of crust, sauce, cheese, seasoning, and bake instead of having ten toppings doing all the work.

The first thing everybody notices is the size. These slices are enormous. A whole Benny's pie is 28 inches, and a single slice is basically a meal you carry with two hands. But the size would be a gimmick if the pizza underneath it was weak. That is not the case here.

The crust has the structure I want from this style of pizza. I can fold the slice without the entire thing collapsing, the edge gives me enough chew without turning into a thick breadstick, and the base carries the sauce and cheese without feeling doughy. The pepperoni brings the salty, slightly greasy bite you expect, while the cheese slice lets the sauce, cheese blend, and crust speak for themselves.

My New York Test

I grew up in Brooklyn. I know New York pizza when I see it, when I pick it up, and when I taste it. Benny's is New York-style pizza all the way. It is not trying to copy a polished sit-down pizzeria. It is going after the slice-shop experience: big slice, fold it, eat it, keep moving.

The Counter Feels Like a Real Slice Shop

Part of why Benny's works for me is that the room matches the food. This is not a place where you walk in and wonder whether you are supposed to whisper. The pizza counter, deck oven, stacked boxes, hanging lights, stickers, menu boards, and decorated paper plates give it personality immediately.

I like that Benny's feels lived in. The walls are not trying to look like a restaurant designer ordered “urban pizza shop package number three.” It feels collected over time. You see art, plates, stickers, wood, old industrial details, and the kind of random visual stuff that gives a neighborhood shop its own identity.

Inside Benny Pennello's: Pure NoDa Energy

The dining area carries the same attitude as the counter. There are wooden picnic-style tables, high-top seating, bright wall art, exposed industrial elements, and enough color that the room never feels generic. It is casual enough for a quick slice but interesting enough that you notice the space while you are there.

This matters because Benny's is not just selling pizza in a box. It fits into the neighborhood. NoDa has always had more personality than polish, and Benny's makes sense here. You can come in during the day, grab a slice before or after spending time around the neighborhood, or use it as the late-night move when most of your other options are disappearing.

I Thought the Owners Had to Be From New York

Because the pizza hit so many familiar notes for me, I got curious about where Benny's came from. I honestly expected the answer to be simple: somebody from New York moved south and opened a slice shop. The real story was different, and I ended up respecting it more.

Benny's Pizza started around Virginia Tech in 2011 when two college friends left their city jobs to build a simple slice shop around giant pizza and neighborhood culture. The company says the inspiration for “Benny” comes from Benedito, a pizza maker who was raised in Brooklyn, spent time in the kitchen at Tiro A Segno in Manhattan, and later made pizzas for neighbors from a backyard brick oven on Virginia's Eastern Shore.

That Brooklyn connection made the whole thing click for me. The Charlotte location is not pretending to be a transplant of a specific New York shop, but the style has real roots in that tradition. Benny's eventually expanded into dozens of towns, and each shop uses its own Benny name and local personality instead of making every location look exactly the same.

The ingredient story is straightforward too. Benny's says its flour comes from the Midwest, its olive oil comes from domestically grown Corto olives, its sauce uses California-grown tomatoes, its cheese is custom blended from Minnesota milk, and its meats are made for the brand in Virginia using Midwestern-raised products. I did not need a company history lesson to enjoy the slice, but I like knowing there is an actual philosophy behind keeping the pizza simple.

Where Benny Pennello's Is in Charlotte

Benny Pennello's is at 2909 N Davidson St #100, Charlotte, NC 28205, right in NoDa. It shares the building with Heist Brewery and sits in one of the easiest parts of Charlotte to turn a pizza stop into a full afternoon or night out.

NoDa's main stretch around North Davidson and 36th Street is nearby, and the shop is also convenient from Villa Heights, Optimist Park, Plaza Midwood, and Uptown. If you are already in this part of Charlotte for breweries, music, bars, art, or just walking around NoDa, Benny's is an easy food stop to work into the plan.

Hours

At the time this review was updated, Benny's official Charlotte location page listed Monday through Wednesday from 11:00 a.m. to midnight, Thursday from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 a.m., Friday and Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 a.m., and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to midnight. That late-night schedule is one of the reasons Benny's is so useful in NoDa, especially on weekends.

Parking is the one thing I would plan around instead of assuming. NoDa can get busy, especially at night and on weekends, so give yourself a little extra time if you are driving. Once you are in the neighborhood, Benny's is the kind of place that works well as part of a larger NoDa night instead of a destination where you need to rush in and rush back out.

Who I Recommend Benny's To

  • Anybody looking for New York-style pizza in Charlotte.
  • People who want a serious portion without ordering an entire normal-sized pizza.
  • Late-night eaters around NoDa.
  • Groups that want something casual instead of a sit-down dinner.
  • Visitors exploring North Davidson Street who want a spot that actually feels connected to the neighborhood.
  • People who appreciate a simple cheese or pepperoni slice as much as a rotating specialty.

If your favorite pizza is thick, heavily topped, knife-and-fork pizza, Benny's may not be your exact lane. If you want a giant thin slice you can fold and attack with both hands, this is absolutely your lane.

Final Verdict: Benny's Gets an Easy 5 Stars From Me

I have been to Benny Pennello's countless times, and I will be back countless more times. That is probably the strongest thing I can say in a restaurant review. I am not giving it five stars because one visit happened to go well. I am giving it five stars because I already knew what Benny's could do, came back again, and got exactly the pizza and experience I wanted.

The slice is massive without becoming a novelty, the New York-style character feels real, the room has personality, the prices make sense for the portion, and the NoDa location gives it a natural place in a night out. As somebody born and raised in Brooklyn, I am picky about what I call New York pizza. Benny's passes that test for me.

Benny's is fire. I recommend it to locals, visitors, and anybody reading this who is wondering whether the giant slice is actually worth it. It is.
