Our Honest Review of Hot Dog Depot in Fort Mill

I've eaten at Hot Dog Depot at least 10 times between its Fort Mill and Rock Hill locations. Probably more, but who's counting? When I'm craving a hot dog, this is one of the places I think of, and I've found plenty on the menu that I enjoy.

For this review, we're heading to the Fort Mill location at 106 Clebourne Street. It's a Charlotte-area option worth knowing about if you love hot dogs, especially when you want more choices than the usual chili dog. My orders have included Depot Dogs, Coney Dogs, Chicago Dogs, Reuben Dogs, Carolina Poppers, and Hot Honey Brats. I'd recommend every one of them.

The Depot Dog Is My Favorite

The Depot Dog, pictured here, comes with chili, slaw, onions, and mustard. If you enjoy that combination, it's an order I'd recommend. I also appreciate having several other styles to choose from, especially after enough visits to get familiar with the menu.

I usually make it a meal with fries and a drink. The Depot Dog costs $4.19 on its own or $9.69 as a combo with medium fries or tots and a medium drink. Upgrades are available, and the price depends on your selections.

If you're ordering with someone, the individual dogs make it easy to try a couple of styles. You can also customize an order with more than 20 toppings, although I've had plenty to keep me interested among the named combinations.

Other Hot Dogs I'd Recommend

The Coney Dog is one I order when I'm in the mood for chili and cheese sauce. It leaves out the slaw, onions, and mustard from the Depot Dog, so the two are different orders despite sharing the same $4.19 price. The Reuben also costs $4.19, with kraut, Swiss cheese, and Thousand Island dressing. I enjoy all three, and the toppings usually decide which one I'm craving.

The Chicago Dog is another recommendation, especially if you like a fully dressed hot dog. Its toppings include onions, mustard, dill relish, tomato, a pickle spear, sport peppers, and celery salt. At $4.69, it's a different option from the chili-covered dogs without a big jump in price.

The Carolina Popper is the most expensive of my regular choices at $7.19 individually. It uses jalapeño cheddar sausage topped with Palmetto Cheese, bacon, and jalapeños. That combination is worth considering if cheese and peppers are what you look for on a menu. I also order the Hot Honey Brat, which costs $5.19 and comes with hot honey and grilled onions. These two change the sausage as well as the toppings, giving you more variety than dressing the same hot dog six different ways.

Those are all orders I've tried and would recommend. I haven't worked through every item, but I've found enough that I enjoy to keep changing my order when I visit.

Build Your Own Hot Dog

If none of the named combinations matches what you want, the custom hot dog starts at $2.69, with a custom combo listed at $8.19. The menu offers more than 20 toppings, so you can choose your own combination instead of removing several ingredients from a signature order. Extras and upgrades can change the price.

That's useful when people in the same group have different preferences. Someone can order a Coney Dog while another person chooses their own toppings. I've enjoyed the signature styles enough to keep ordering them, but I like that the menu gives customers that flexibility.

Hot Dog Depot Prices

The standard hot dog combos range from $8.19 for a custom order to $12.69 for the Carolina Popper. Each includes medium fries or tots and a medium drink before upgrades. The Coney and Reuben combos are $9.69, the Chicago combo is $10.19, and the Hot Honey Brat combo is $10.69. That puts several of the meals I order around the $10 mark before tax.

Ordering individually gives you another way to plan a meal. A Depot Dog and a Coney Dog total $8.38 before tax, with no side or drink included. A Chicago Dog and a Hot Honey Brat total $9.88 on the same basis. Those aren't combo deals, but they're useful examples if you'd rather spend your budget trying two hot dogs.

For me, the prices are reasonable enough that Hot Dog Depot remains a regular takeout option. The more elaborate sausage orders cost more, so it's worth looking at the full menu before assuming every combo has the same price. Wiener Wednesday Discounts

Wednesday is worth keeping in mind if your dinner plans are flexible. Hot Dog Depot advertises 20% off individual hot dogs and 10% off hot dog combos for Wiener Wednesday. The larger discount applies to the individual dogs, so the offer works differently depending on how you order.

If you've been meaning to try another style, that can be a good day to do it. Check the promotion in the restaurant's ordering system before paying, particularly if you add upgrades. The listed discount is for hot dogs and hot dog combos, so don't assume it applies to burgers, chicken, or the rest of the menu.

Five Stars for the Staff

The staff get 5 stars from me. I've had great experiences with them at both locations, and they deserve credit for making Hot Dog Depot a place I'm happy to recommend. After this many visits, I appreciate knowing I can look forward to good service along with my meal.

The Fries Are Average

I always get fries with my order, but they're nothing special. They're fine alongside a hot dog, and I'll continue ordering them, but they don't get the same enthusiasm from me as the main part of the meal. This is one reason my overall score is 4 out of 5 even though I'd give the dogs themselves 5 stars.

Hot Dog Depot now cooks its hot dogs, chicken, and fried sides in 100% beef tallow. The side menu includes plain fries and tots at $2.69, cheese versions at $3.79, and chili cheese versions at $4.79. Onion rings and cheese stix are also available at $4.99. Those options give you room to change the meal, although my opinion here is about the fries I usually order.

What to Expect When You Visit

The Fort Mill restaurant is at 106 Clebourne Street, Suite 101, in Fort Mill, South Carolina. Charlotte Vibes covers it as a Charlotte-area restaurant, but the address is across the state line. Make sure you select Fort Mill when arranging an order, since Hot Dog Depot also operates in Rock Hill.

Neither location has indoor seating. Rock Hill has outdoor seating, while the Fort Mill location is near parks and breweries. At Fort Mill, plan to take your food home, eat in the car, or order delivery through the restaurant's website. I don't mind eating in the car sometimes, but this isn't where I'd plan an indoor meal with a group.

The hours give you more flexibility on Friday and Saturday, when the restaurant stays open until 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday closing time is 8 p.m., and Sunday service ends at 4 p.m. That Sunday closing time is worth remembering if you're used to stopping by for dinner. What I Haven't Tried Yet

Writing this review made me realize that I've never ordered a burger or anything from the chicken menu. After at least 10 visits, that surprised me. Hot Dog Depot has custom burgers, a Depot Burger, and a Southwest Burger, along with boneless wings and several chicken sandwiches. They give a group more choices when everyone doesn't want hot dogs.

There are desserts, too, including a hot fudge cake and hand-spun milkshakes made with Tillamook ice cream. I'm including those choices in the menu so readers can see what's available, but my rating comes from the hot dogs, fries, and service I've experienced. I'll have to try the other food before offering an opinion on it.
