More Than 10 Visits Earned This 5-Star Rating

I love giving out 5-star restaurant reviews because it means the entire experience hit the spot. The Smoke Pit gets all five from me. This rating isn’t based on one lucky visit either. I’ve eaten at The Smoke Pit more than 10 times across different locations, and I’ve consistently walked away happy with the food, service, and atmosphere!

I live in Steele Creek, so there’s no shortage of good food close to home. When I’m craving smoked, traditional all-American barbecue, I’ll make the trip over to the Arboretum on Providence Road for The Smoke Pit depending on where I’m at. It has become one of those restaurants I already know I can count on before I walk through the door.

I’m a pretty big guy, and I love food, so I’ve worked my way through a large part of the menu over the years. I’m not saying I’ve eaten every single item they sell, but I’ve tried most of the things I know I’d order again. That history gives me a much better picture of the restaurant than a review based on one plate from one night.

The Smoke Flavor Is Exactly What I Come Here For

The first thing I want from barbecue is smoke, and The Smoke Pit delivers it. The meat has an authentic hickory-smoked flavor that tastes like somebody actually put in the time instead of trying to fake barbecue with sauce. The restaurant says its meats can spend up to 18 hours smoking low and slow over local hickory, and the flavor comes through when the food reaches the table.

My most recent visit was a few weeks ago, and I didn’t exactly order light. The table included burnt ends, smoked whole wings, smoked sausage, mac and cheese, collard greens, barbecue pit beans, a baked potato, jalapeño cream corn, hushpuppies, cornbread, and a Texas Twinkie.

The meat is what brings me back. That deep smoky flavor works across the different cuts without making everything taste identical. I can order sausage, wings, brisket, pork, or burnt ends and still feel like I’m getting a different meal instead of the same sauce poured over a different protein.

Burnt Ends, Wings, Sausage, and a Texas Twinkie Filled the Table

The burnt ends are one of the things I already know I’m interested in when I see them on a barbecue menu. The Smoke Pit gives them the full smoke treatment, and they fit right into the kind of heavy, filling meal I’m coming here to eat.

The smoked whole wings and sausage also gave me exactly the kind of straightforward barbecue flavors I wanted. There’s no need to overcomplicate food like this. Good meat, real smoke, proper cooking, and a plate big enough to leave satisfied will do the job.

The Texas Twinkie is one of the more distinctive items on the menu. It’s a bacon-wrapped jalapeño stuffed with brisket and cream cheese. You get smoke, meat, pepper, bacon, and that creamy filling all packed into one item. It fits the restaurant perfectly because it isn’t trying to be delicate. It’s barbecue food built to be rich and filling.

The Sides Hold Their Own Next to the Barbecue

A barbecue plate can fall apart quickly if the sides feel like filler. That wasn’t the case here. I loaded up on mac and cheese, collard greens, barbecue pit beans, jalapeño cream corn, a baked potato, hushpuppies, and cornbread, so there wasn’t much empty space left on the table.

That variety is part of why The Smoke Pit works so well when I’m hungry. I can build a plate around the meat I’m craving and still have enough side options to change the meal from one visit to the next. Sometimes I want mac and cheese and greens. Other times I’m going after the cream corn, beans, potatoes, or whatever combination sounds right that day.

When I show up, I’m not looking for a small plate. I want smoked meats, big sides, and a meal that fills me belly up! But, hey, what can I say, I'm a BIG guy and I love good food.

Friendly Service and a Lively Room Complete the Experience

Food alone doesn’t get a restaurant to five stars for me. The service has to be there too, and that has been one of the most consistent parts of my visits to The Smoke Pit. The waitresses have always been friendly, welcoming, and knowledgeable when I’ve been there.

The atmosphere also fits the food. It’s lively without feeling like the room is trying too hard to create energy. People are eating big plates of barbecue, talking, enjoying themselves, and having a good time. When the food is coming out hot and everybody around you looks happy to be there, that atmosphere happens naturally.

Prices have also been about where I expect them to be for the amount and type of food being served. Barbecue isn’t a quick burger off a flat top. The meats take time, the portions are substantial, and I’ve never left feeling like the experience didn’t line up with what I paid.

The Smoke Pit Started With One Smoker in Concord

The Smoke Pit has an unusual story behind it. The restaurant was founded in December 2014 by Devin Barbee, Joey Graham, and Jeremy Beaver, bringing together backgrounds in NASCAR engine building, computer engineering, mechanical engineering, butchery, catering, and backyard barbecue.

Barbee had previously worked as a NASCAR engine builder before leaving racing and opening The Stock Market, an upscale North Carolina butcher shop. Graham had spent years experimenting with barbecue while coming from a computer engineering background, and Beaver brought a mechanical engineering background into the restaurant and catering side.

The original Concord restaurant reportedly began with one smoker and a much smaller expectation for how much food it would sell. Demand quickly changed that. The operation expanded from a small barbecue concept into a regional restaurant brand built around fresh meat, in-house butchery, local hickory, and long smoking times.

The menu also stretches beyond one regional barbecue style. Carolina pulled pork sits alongside Texas brisket, burnt ends, smoked sausage, chicken, turkey, ribs, and other smoked meats. That mix is one reason I can keep coming back without ordering the same plate every time.

The Charlotte restaurant brought The Smoke Pit directly into the city when it opened at the Arboretum in late 2025. The company transformed the former Chili’s building into a large barbecue restaurant with the kitchen capacity needed for its smoking operation. The brand has continued expanding in North Carolina, including its newer Mooresville location.

My Final Verdict: 5 Out of 5

The Smoke Pit has earned its five stars from me through consistency. I’ve been back more than enough times to know what I’m getting, and the restaurant has continued delivering the kind of smoky, filling barbecue experience that keeps me coming back.

When I want traditional American smoked food and I’m anywhere near South Charlotte, The Smoke Pit at the Arboretum is an easy choice for me. Good food, good service, and a lively room have made it one of the barbecue restaurants I’m comfortable recommending without needing to think twice.
